Technical University of Denmark offers PhD Scholarship

Technical University of Denmark offers PhD Scholarship - Structural Modelling of Wind Turbine Blades, Department of Mechanical Engineering. 1 PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering as soon as possible. Do you want to start a global career with a challenging job that makes a real difference? Do you want to develop innovative tools for future design of intelligent wind turbine blades?

The project
This project is motivated by the vision of being able to provide passive control of the dynamic behavior of wind turbine blades by utilizing the anisotropic properties of composite materials in an intelligent manner. To obtain this vision, one of the main building blocks needed is a general, fully coupled and validated beam element. Also needed are effective and exact methods for determination of stiffness and mass coefficients for such a beam element based on 3D geometry and material data for the blade. The purpose of this Ph.D. project is to develop such a fully coupled beam element.
The fully coupled beam element can be used in aeroelastic calculations to design the structure in order to reduce loading on the blade. Modern pitch-regulating wind turbines use control systems to reduce the blade loads. However, these systems are too slow to react to sudden wind changes. There is therefore high interest in building active or passive control systems into the blades to reduce especially fatigue loads. Passive systems are much more robust with respect to operation interruptions and it is desirable to use the anisotropic material properties for composites to optimize the load reduction behavior of the blades.
The Ph.D. project is part of a larger project supported by the Danish Energy Research Programme (EFP). The Ph.D. project is also partly supported by Vestas Wind Systems A/S, one of the worlds leading wind turbine companies.

Qualifications and work experience
The candidate should have a master degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in:

* Analytical modeling
* Mechanical problems especially involving beams
* The theory behind the finite element method
* Fiber reinforced composite materials

It is an advantage if the candidate has some experience with:

* Wind turbine design
* Aeroelastic codes

What we offer
We offer an exciting and challenging job in an international environment with good possibilities for professional and personal development. The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a leading technical university in northern Europe and benchmarks with the best universities in the world. Risø National Laboratory has recently been incorporated into DTU, forming a world leading environment in wind energy and disciplines associated with wind turbines. The successful candidate will become member of an environment with activities and expertise in structural mechanics and composite materials in the theoretical field, central to the present project, and the complementary experimental field. The activities are typically characterized by its innovative content and close cooperation with leading wind power companies.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

However, Ph.D. students in Denmark are supported by grants on a competitive level, being equivalent to a standard salary for an engineer with a similar experience in a normal job The Ph.D. stipend has a fixed duration of 3 years.
