Inggris: Beasiswa S3 Pascasarjana

UK Lord Kelvin - Adam Smith PhD Scholarship in Stochastic Process Algebra Modelling, University of Glasgow

Stochastic process algebra modelling of ROS regulation in oxidative stress
Supervisor: Professor Muffy Calder

Recently, Professors Calder, in collaboration with Professor Hillston and Dr Gilmore (Edinburgh University) have developed a new approach to intracellular signalling modelling based on the idea that signalling pathways have stochastic, computational content; behaviour is modelled by stochastic process algebras (SPAs), which denote continuous time Markov
chains. The SPA approach is novel, modelling species rather than molecules, and affords new quantitative analysis using logics or throughput, in addition to traditional differential equation (DE) simulations and stochastic simulation.

The aim of this studentship, in collaboration with Professor Dominiczak, Cardiovascular Medicine, is to develop the stochastic process algebra (SPA) approach for validated, predictive models of the regulation of ROS (reactive oxygen species) in oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a major factor in cardiovascular diseases and endothelial dysfunction in particular. The main problem is an imbalance between ROS (reactive oxygen species) and nitric oxide, the relationships between the components are complex, involving switching and feedbacks.

The student will extend the SPA approach to model spatial aspects and abstractions over pathway components, and build comprehensive models of oxidative stress, reflecting the subtle relationships between the ways ROS and nitric oxide are produced and consumed.

The starting point will be a small prototype model which has been developed by Calder, Hillston and Dominiczak.

The studentship is for four years.Further details are given at this page.

The studentship is suitable for candidates with a good first degree (or Masters) in Computing Science or Mathematics; a willingness to engage with medicine and biochemistry is also required. The student will also participate in several related collaborative research projects.

The closing date is 30 June 2007.

The application procedure can be found at:
http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/phd/ application.html.

Informal enquiries to: muffy@dcs.gla.ac.uk.

The Faculty of Science is a leading provider of education across the spectrum of the sciences. It offers a diverse range of specialisations, research programs and facilities, and an extensive liaison with international institutions. The School of Biological Sciences is a core part of the Faculty dedicated to producing world-class research teaching and research programs in Biology.
The School is currently seeking a results-driven Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct research into a project that will determine the mechanisms by which ants and honeybees solve dynamic problems when foraging. This will be achieved through the use of experiments in which ant and honeybee colonies are confronted with food sources that change in quality, disappear or (re-)appear.

This project is part of a larger interdisciplinary project funded by the Human Frontier Science Program Optimization in natural systems: ants, bees and slime moulds. The aim of this project is to understand solution construction mechanisms in biological systems by studying the processes that underlie the ability of natural systems (ants, bees and slime moulds) to adapt to changing conditions.

This is a unique opportunity for the appointee to become part of an interdisciplinary research team spread over four different countries: Australia (ants and bees), Sweden (mathematics), Germany (computer science) and Japan (slime moulds).

To succeed, the appointee will have a relevant PhD, an interest in evolution, and experience in animal behaviour. A background handling ants and/or honeybees will be highly advantageous, as will an ability to attract grant funding.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) need batteries with a high energy density, a high power density and a long life cycle. The charge/discharge rates of today’s commercial Li-ion batteries are measured in hours. This implies that Li-ions diffuse through the electrode material in one hour over micro-metre distances, whereas in HEV technology this process has to happen in a matter of minutes. The (dis)charge rate or power density is dictated by the relatively slow Li-ion transport through the solid-state matrix of the electrodes. Recently, nano-sizing the active electrode particles, i.e. reducing the length of the solid-state diffusion pathway, has proven a successful strategy to overcome this limitation. Unfortunately, direct substitution of nano-sized for micron-sized active materials in current electrode fabrication processes leads to unfavourable morphologies, lowering the practically achievable power density.
The two main causes are explained below. The aim of this project is to explore and optimise the morphology of Li-ion battery electrode materials (particle sizes and electrolyte channels) with respect to battery performance. This will include modelling, designing, synthesising and characterising Li-ion battery electrode (both anode and cathode) morphologies The primary goal is to gain a better understanding of how battery performance can be optimised by controlling the morphology, but this could well lead to battery systems with optimised high power density.

The research will be conducted in the ‘Fundamental Aspects of Materials and Energy’ Group, which is part of the R3 department at the Delft Reactor Institute. Synthesis will be performed in collaboration with the ‘Nano Structured Materials Group at DelftChemTech. Nuclear Magnetic resonance experiments will be performed in collaboration with the NMR facility at Radboud University in Nijmegen. The PhD student will be responsible for material synthesis, method development, the cha

Requirements

University Graduate
The candidate must have an MSc or equivalent degree in chemistry or physics and preferably experience of material synthesis. He/she must be able to combine practical (synthesis, characterisation) and fundamental work (modelling, build theories). Important qualities for this position are creativity and an ability to learn fast and work alone as well as in a team. As Delft University of Technology is a bilingual institution a good command of written and spoken English is essential and good command of Dutch is preferable.

Additional information about the job:

Organization

Delft University of Technology Department of Radiation, Radionuclides & Reactors
Delft University of Technology is a multifaceted institution offering education and carrying out research within the technical sciences at an internationally recognised level. Education, research and designs are strongly oriented towards applicability. TU Delft develops technologies for future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. At TU Delft we work in an environment where technical sciences and society converge. TU Delft comprises 8 faculties, unique laboratories, research institutes and schools.

The department of Radiation, Radionuclides & Reactors (www.rrr.tudelft.nl) is housed in the Reactor Institute Delft (RID). Binding elements for the department are nuclear radiation and reactions. Although its areas of interest are various, whether they be materials, sensors and instrumentation, energy and sustainable production, or health: all our research is somehow related to radiation. In experimental research, extensive use is made of the research facilities of the Reactor Institute Delft as well as of large, international research facilities. The close collaboration with the Reactor Institute Delft does guarantee access to the reactor and the irradiation facilities, as well as to the associated experimental facilities, and has also resulted in three centres of knowledge: the Positron Centre, the Neutron Centre and the Luminescence Centre. The confluence of this knowledge makes its research unique at a national, and –partly- at international level.

One of the sections within the department is the section NPM2 (Neutron and Positron Methods in Materials) which has three main aspects: (1) Research to invent and identify new ways and new approaches for the use of neutrons and positrons as research tools, (2) Development of new methods and instrumentation for use locally, and at major facilitiesand (3) Application of the new methods and instruments in own research to prove and to demonstrate their feasibility.

NPM2 collaborates particularly closely with the section Fundamental Aspects of Materials and Energy (FAME), also a section within R3, this being one of the major users of neutron and positron methods both locally and internationally. Given the increasing focus on health research in R3, closer collaboration with the section Radiation and Isotopes for Health (RIH) is being established.

India Post Doctorate Positions in Understanding Innovation Capacity in Relation to Livestock fodder in Developing Countries

Two Post doctorate positions: Understanding innovation capacity in relation to livestock fodder in developing countries (m/f) UNU-MERIT

The International Livestock Research Institute and UNU-MERIT are jointly implementing a project to explore ways of strengthening innovation capacity in order to address the need to upgrade fodder use practices in different livestock production systems in India and Nigeria.
This is being conducted within the overall goal of identifying ways of better using livestock related knowledge to achieve social and economic development goals in sustainable ways in the poorest developing countries. This is a three year project funded by the UK’s Department for International Development and it seeks to appoint 2 post-doctoral positions. The persons appointed will be required to have a Ph.D. in either natural or social sciences, but with some understanding of systems perspectives on innovation. Experience of agriculture, particularly livestock and developing countries would be an advantage. Candidates from the South Asian and West African regions are strongly encouraged to apply., but candidates from all regions are welcome to apply. The project offers the unique opportunity of exploring critical operational, policy and theoretical questions concerning ways of operationalising the innovation systems concept in agriculture and rural development interventions in developing countries. This is at the cutting edge of the emerging field of innovation studies in development. The project provides successful candidates with an excellent opportunity to conduct field based research and there will be ample opportunities to publish and present this work at international conferences.
